Two decades of partnerships at international and European level
About us
Media Animation is a resource centre for media and digital literacy in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the French-speaking part of Belgium. Founded in 1972, it is recognised and subsidised by the Ministry of Education as a resource centre for free education and by the Ministry of Culture for its continuing education missions. With 45 employees (including 41 full-time equivalents), the Media Animation team is developing its activities in French-speaking Belgium as well as at European and international level. Media Animation mainly targets adults, in particular teachers, youth workers, social and cultural workers. Media Animation carries out research, information, training, publication and educational resource activities in the field of media education. Its mission is to support educational players along two complementary lines of action:
Consultancy, audiovisual and multimedia production: professional support for media production in the non-commercial sector.
Media and digital literacy: raising awareness among political and educational players, training teachers and educational mediators (social workers, educators, etc.), producing teaching resources, setting up research initiatives, etc.
The challenges of media literacy know no borders
Since 2000, Media Animation has been involved in an international network and has responded to several calls for proposals from European institutions and organizations. Developing transnational projects means building links, collaborating with competent partners and pooling our expertise.
This enabled it to develop new activities, to establish partnerships, to exchange expertise and to obtain additional resources.
Developing transnational projects also means forging links, collaborating with competent partners and pooling our expertise, based on the principle that projects benefit from being shared and that collaboration is an asset. For the past 20 years the association has been involved in numerous European projects aimed at teachers, educators and youth workers, parents and their children:
Focus on some of our major media education projects
Alongside these European projects or part of them, Média Animation is structurally in charge of major recurring media education projects covering a wide range of themes and aimed at different types of audiences. Each project proposes specific methodologies and achievements. Here’s an overview of some of the projects, so don’t hesitate to visit the dedicated web pages to find out more!
Our quantitative surveys #Generation2020 and #Generation2024
Major survey on the digital practices of children and teenagers in French-speaking Belgium.
The Digital Week
A decentralised, participatory annual event offering hundreds of free or near-free digital activities across Wallonia and Brussels. It’s for everyone who wants to discover, understand and test new web and digital technologies.
The Film Festival “A films ouverts”
Since 2010, in March, the À Films Ouverts Festival and its associative partners have been offering its public the chance to take part in an anti-racist Short Film Competition that encourages civic expression and creativity and the chance to watch films that take a stand against racism and open up discussions on the issue.
“Mediacoach” training programme
MediaCoach is a training programme that encourages people to approach the various dimensions of the media in a conscious, critical and active way. The course is designed to familiarise trainers with media education and encourage them to carry out practical projects with all audiences, young people and adults alike.
“Pop Modèles”
Through themed videos and analyses, POP MODELS invites to tackle and debate the representations and stereotypes exploited by pop culture in the broadest sense (television, cinema, advertising): sexist clichés, stigmatisation of women, masculinity, portrayal of minorities, representation of foreigners, etc.
“ Les dossiers de l’éducation aux médias “
is a collection of media literacy publications. It offers critical analyses of the issues that drive contemporary media productions and the uses to which they are put. Focusing on a specific theme, each issue offers avenues for action and reflection for members of the public wishing to question the way they evolve in a media environment, but also to develop educational approaches.
“Media Expression » workshops:
Média Animation animators are experienced in supervising, facilitating and training people to carry out media projects. In a spirit of emancipation and empowerment, our team regularly runs radio or video expression workshops that promote the point of view and commitment of citizens.
Teacher trainings:
As an official resource centre, Média Animation provides media education training for primary, secondary and higher education teachers as part of their continuing education. These days are organised on an ad hoc basis or as part of structural and annual agreements. Each day focuses on a specific media education theme.
“Tournez jeunesse”
is a practical guide for youth workers, teachers and educators who want to start making videos with their groups. The guide covers the objectives of the project, how to get started, and how to work out the script, cut and storyboard as a group. It describes the equipment needed and how to organise the filming. It ends with the editing and distribution of the finished product. A complete overview of all aspects of video production.
The online training modules offered by Média Animation
can be used to discover and explore a media education topic independently, or as a complement to face-to-face training. Once the content has been assimilated, teachers and presenters can also use it in the classroom or during a presentation. The modules are available free of charge and cover the following themes: Criticism of information; conspiracy theories; the use of humour in the face of discrimination; media parenting with vulnerable audiences; audiences with disabilities; young people’s use of social networks; Arab representation in film.
The parentsconnectés.be website is a project designed to bring together all the information, tools and resources dealing with media parenting:
supporting children’s use of screens and media. Média Animation supports parents, grandparents and all professionals by providing advice, resources and tools to help them better understand the media and digital world in which children and teenagers are evolving.
At the request and with the support of the RTBF (Belgian French-speaking State Radio and Television), Média Animation is the author of 4 studies exploring the representation of minorities in the media and journalistic language.
Initially aimed at journalists themselves, these studies will be of interest to anyone wishing to deconstruct the language of the media, their stereotypes and the societal visions that are unduly conveyed. The first study is entitled ‘Sexism, Media and Society’, followed by ‘Racism, Media and Society’, then ‘LGBTphobia, Media and Society’ and finally ‘Validism, Media and Society’. These studies, written in French, are freely downloadable.d
